Il sistema stradale romano già nei primi secoli della Res Publica correva lungo la penisola e consentiva agli eserciti consolari di spostarsi verso le prime province conquistate, come ad esempio la Sicilia e la Gallia Cisalpina. Al momento della massima espansione dell'Impero la rete viaria romana misurava oltre 80.000 chilometri, ripartiti fra 24 strade che si irradiavano da Roma verso l'Italia e altre che toccavano tutti i territori dell'Impero, dalla Britannia alla Mesopotamia, dalle Colonne d'Ercole al Mar Caspio.
The Roman road network spread the Italic peninsula already during the Republican age so that legions were able to move from Rome to the first conquered provinces, as for instance, to Sicily and Cisalpine Gaul. At the top of the empire's expansion, the road system was over 80,000 km long, based on 24 roads irradiating from Rome to all the territories, spreading from Britain to Mesopotamia, from Hercules'pillars to the Caspian Sea.
La via Latina è una delle consolari più antiche, forse già esistente in tempi prestoirici, prima della sua sistemazione a strada avvenuta tra il IV ed il II a.C. Più antica dell'Appia, usciva dalla medesima Porta Capena del recinto delle Serviane e raggiungeva anch'essa Capua (l'antica Casilinum) tramite un percorso più settentrionale della Regina Viarum, passando per le moderne Frosinone, Aquino e Cassino.
Al GZ è possibile vedere un brevissimo tratto di basolato che affiora nel sentiero di ghia che segue l'andamento dell'antica via; alla vostra destra si apre il parco della Caffarella; sulla sinistra, qualche passo più avanti, alcune strutture connesse all'antica strada (si tratta di grossi muri in opera quadrata di tufo) .
Il tratto meglio conservato nel territorio dell'Urbe si trova comunque all'interno del parco delle tombe della Via Latina (a poco meno di un chilometro in linea d'aria dal GZ).
The Via Latina is one of the oldest roads, maybe already existing in the ancient times, before it become an ordinary road between IV and b.C.. It is older than the Appian Way, getting out the town from the same Porta Capena of the Servian Walls and it got to Capua (as the Appia did) but following a northern path through modern cities of Frosinone, Aquino and Cassino.
Here at GZ you can see a little part of ancient flagstones getting out the dirt; on the right hand side there is the parco della Caffarella (an urban park) and on the left some old building remains connected to the road (opus quadratum).
Here in town, by the way, the best preserved part is inside of the parco delle tombe della Via Latina (less than 1 km away from the GZ).

Questa è la 18° cache di una serie dedicata ai tracciati delle strade consolari romane ancora esistenti nel territorio di Roma. Si tratta di cache situate nei luoghi dove il tracciato conserva meglio la sua presenza.
This is the 18th cache out of a series dedicatated to the Roman roads still existing in modern Rome. Usually the cache is hidden close by the best preserved part of the ancient road.

- the so called Salaria Vetus, from the ancient Collina gate to the Salaria Nova (going through Porta Pinciana)
- diverticulum in Via Balestrini, between Praenestina and Labicana
- diverticulum in the undergroung parking lot of Ikea Anagnina
- diverticulum inside the Parco dei Fumetti in Mezzocammino district, between Ostiensis and, probably, the Laurentina way.
