Geocache Description:

A Wherigo cache of 9 stages which should take you around 2-3 hours to complete on foot. This is a cache which would be ideal if you are a cyclist. You could drive but parking in some of the locations could be awkward. The walk is almost circular. If you are driving to Gosforth, try parking somewhere near All Saints Church, or one of the streets around Elgy Green (N55 00.123 W1 37.678) for a short(ish) walk back from the final location.

Starting at All Saints Church, the general route will take you past a number of stages towards South Gosforth, then heading towards St Nicholas Hospital (the old Northumberland War Hospital), then meandering back towards (and past) All Saints via one or two other locations.

Soldiers relaxing at Gosforth Camp.

Although more than a hundred years have passed, the slaughter of millions in the Great War of 1914-18 still haunts.

Around 1,500 men from Gosforth fought in the war and almost 300 were killed. They died in France and Belgium, at sea, in the Royal Flying Corps (later to become the RAF), at Gallipoli, in Egypt and the Middle East and in East Africa. Some died in prisoner-of-war camps and a few died in hospitals in this country.

In 1914, Gosforth was made up of Bulman Village, Coxlodge and South Gosforth and had an urban district council of its own. In 1918, a committee was created by the council to decide how to commemorate the sacrifices of the war. Three years previously the council had appointed a lady health visitor who was tasked with reducing the high number of childhood illnesses and deaths. The decision was made to look to the future and build a maternity and child welfare centre in memory of those who had died in the Great War. Along the way, you will visit this location and other points of interest in Gosforth pertinent to the Great War.

My thanks to both mike.armstrong and Phil100 who tested the cartridge and provided invaluable feedback before publication.

Finally, please do not attempt this cache at night. It passes through a number of locations which would be inappropriate with torchlight.
