Geocache Description:

Standard blue top peanut butter jar

cache is located at the edge of the Copper Range Railroad (CRRR) railyard.  Now a city park and residential houses, little remains of the large complex once here.

Please re-hide the cache carefully so it does not get discovered by non-cachers.

The CRRR built a large railyard here, with over 37 buildings, including 2 machine shops, 2 blacksmith shops, storage sheds, passenger and freight stations, a brick 15 stall locomotive roundhouse and a massive coal dock.

Foundations by cache:  according to the 1928 Sanborn map, there was a gasoline storage site by cache. The concrete foundations downstream supported 4 - 14,000 gal gas tanks, and one smaller tank. Moving upstream of the tanks were an office and then a hay barn. Note that this is not the original location of Huron Creek. The creek was moved when M-26 was moved south to lessen the steepness of grade as it climbed uphill.

Concrete dock to the north (now the park) was the site of the M Van Olden Company, which operated a large coal dock and cement warehouse.  To the east was the CR coal dock.  Starting at what is now a wood boardwalk (using the original dock pilings), the coal dock ran 700' long and 40' high.  Mounted on the dock were 3 unloading towers, 180' high.  Behind the dock (now the road) were 30' high coal bins, capable of storing 16,000 tons of coal.
