Gustave Doré's superb genre painting "The Neophyte" (ca. 1866-8) features a young Carthusian novice who apparently took his vows hastily & is beset with misgivings. Seated amongst a row of doting, driveling elders, he stares out at the viewer, his eyes full of loneliness & alienation. Doré's genius for caricature serves to heighten the extreme contrast in the painting between youth & old age. Dore sensed the grim comedy of the young man's predicament and quipped, "He will be over the wall tonight. This melodramatic, Romantic image of spiritual alienation was one of Doré's favorites. During the next two decades, he varied & expanded upon this composition in more than a dozen etchings & drawings. Doré was born in Strasbourg. An artistic prodigy, he produced his first lithographs by the age of 15. He made his debut at the Salon in 1848 & by 1854 had achieved considerable fame. Extraordinarily prolific, he illustrated over 220 books, among them Dante's Inferno (1861) and the Bible (1866). His graphic style, darkly Romantic, was immensely popular & by 1875 he'd become France's most celebrated illustrator. After 1850 he began submitting landscapes, genre paintings, historical & biblical scenes to the Salon.
