Geocache Description:

At 07.30am, on a 14 mile front running north of the river Somme in France 60,000 British soldiers climbed out of their trenches and began to move across to No Man's Land. Within 1 hour over half of these men were either dead or wounded - among them were the friends neighbours and colleagues of 18 DLI, the Durham Pals, who in 24 hours lost 75 men and had 250 wounded. It remains the greatest loss in a single day for Britain.

Its difficult to imagine what those soldiers went through. Have a seat and maybe reflect on this for a few minutes.

I wonder what they would they say about today's world that they had fought for?

Have a look at the plaque below and extract the following information for the final cache coordinates a short walk away at

N 54 46.ABC W 001 33.DEF

'the story of the DLI begins in 17AF'

'By 1D18 the DLI had raised B3 battalions'

'5C years later, the 68th was chosen to become a new light infantry regiment

E = number of letters in the third word written on the plaque

Check Sum A+B+C+D+E+F = 28
