Geocache Description:

TUBBY'S TURF

THE SECOND INNINGS!

** This geocache is dedicated to my friend Liam who just loooves his cricket!!!!!

The cache is not located at the published coordinates so don't go onto the ground, especially when a cricket match is in progress!

Tubby Taylor in full flight!

Mark “Tubby” Taylor is a former Australian cricket player and test opening batsman who played for Australia from 1988 to 1999, as well as captain from 1994 to 1999, succeeding Allan Border. He was widely regarded as an instrumental component in Australia's rise to test cricket dominance, and his captaincy was regarded as adventurous and highly effective.

He retired from Test cricket on 2nd February, 1999. In 104 Test matches, he scored 7,525 runs with a batting average of 43.49, including 19 centuries and 40 fifties. He was also an excellent first slip – his 157 catches, at the time, a test record. Mark Taylor played many matches at Waitara Oval for his team, the Northern Districts Rangers, and has fond memories of his time at this ground. Can you imagine Tubby out in the centre belting out a ton?

In recognition of his achievements, Hornsby Council renamed this cricket ground “Mark Taylor Oval”. The official naming ceremony took place on 6th November, 2011 with the great man himself in attendance to witness the event. This is a fitting tribute to a fine Australian.

During his speech at the naming ceremony, Mark recounted a time, at this oval, when he was playing for Northern Districts. He had only recently been appointed the captain of the Autralian Cricket Team. He was walking out onto the ground to open the batting with a young player, who had only played a few games at this level. Mark told the young player he would look after him in the middle. Well, Tubby got out for a duck and the young player went on to make a century!!

To find this cache, you will need to test yourself by going for a (virtual) road trip near the main cricket grounds around Australia and seek out some information.

S = The last 3 digits of the phone number on the white van of an Uninterruptible Power Supplies company.(Feb 2020)

B = The 3-digit black number on the right side of the white square building frame above a training business. (Aug 2022)

The cache is not available 24/7 and the size is listed as "Other" due to the type of container used.

This is the second cache that I've placed at this oval that bears the name "Tubby's Turf". Unfortunately, the first cache kept getting muggled so it was archived. I'm hoping this one will stay for a lot longer. If you would like to see the original cache listing, click on the following link. There are photos in the gallery of the day Mark Taylor was present for the naming ceremony.
