Geocache Description:

Stick to the footpath leaving the village. You are walking in the footsteps of our Roman Ancestors as this old lane has been used for Millennia.

As you round the small wood, the GZ is in the hedgerow on your right.

With your back to the hedgerow looking out into the farmers field you can see an electricity pole with a tree beyond.

Halifax bomber NA612 crashed approximatly half way between the pole and the tree in the early hours of the 4th March 1945 with the loss of her entire crew.

The villagers plant a flag pole on the spot every Rememberance Sunday and fly the RAF colours.

NA612 was shot down by a Junkers Ju88 piloted by Lt Arnold Döring, of 10/NJG3 as the bomber was approaching RAF Dishforth having returned from her mission.

Doring's account states he attacked a "Lancaster" and watched this catch fire in the air before crashing "in a big fire", this aircraft is almost certainly Halifax NA612.

NA612 was badly damaged in his attack, it was seen to turn on its back and dive into the ground near Brafferton. All 7 crew were killed when it came down into a field near Brafferton, about half-way between the Swing Bridge and Burton Grange to the west of the village. On impact a large fire took hold of the wreckage and the aircraft was completely destroyed.
