Albert Namatjira (28 July 1902 – 8 August 1959), was an Aboriginal artist born near MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia. He was a pioneer of indigenous art and one of the most notable of his time.. Namatjira showed interest in art in his early years, but not until about 1934 , that he began to paint seriously. In 1957, he became the first Aboriginal person to be granted restricted Australian citizenship. This allowed him to vote, buy alcohol and have some land rights. In 1956 he won the Archibald Prize. All in all, a notable Australian.[
