Geocache Description:

Lots of plant life, shrubs, trees and bird life going on here for a nice wander through the easy, marked out trails. Always peaceful - a bit of a hidden gem.

This is a medium sized clip-shut box with pad and pen inside for signing and contains a trackable (Gordon the Gorilla). From the el4 website: "Saltoun sits on one of the largest blocks of limestone in Scotland... The quarry site on the Gifford road has been filled in and is now a community woodland project. This and other old quarries near West Saltoun have at one time been used as landfill sites for refuse disposal. All have now been filled, closed, and the surfaces restored and re-seeded." There is parking for the cache in the layby (the gate for the further set of parking spaces has been locked for some time now) but there is space for a couple of cars in the layby. Please be respectful and make sure to leave enough room for others. If combining with the woodland walk(s) mentioned below and parking on the B-road, take care where you park as there is a working farm nearby. Likewise if accessing from the main road from Gifford / East Saltoun take great care on walking along the road to the silver entrance gate and keep to the verge as the road can be busy with fast / heavy vehicles - there is parking available not far away at Saltoun village so please use this and & do not park / leave car on the side of the main road. Be safe! You can combine this short walk and extend it with either Strawberry Wood or with a wander across the road and down through the woodland strip to your left (look out for the silver gate) and blue signpost. Take a wander through this skinny strip of piney lonesome woodland - watch out for wrens flitting about in the scrubby shrubs growing along the side of the path in summer. A great place on a breezy day to hear the wind blowing through the trees. (Take care while wandering as there are a few roots and stumps on the path.) Please also take care when crossing the road as mentioned above - it is a busy route and a fast stretch.
