Oil presence in Alberta’s underground is a major component of the Region’s economic growth. Edmontonians are proud of their roots, their climate and their “hard workers” reputation. Edmontonians ostentatiously display this part of their history by calling their two major Ice hockey teams the Oilers (NHL) and Oil Kings (WHL)
But this Oil… What is it and how did it come here?
Oil is a product of the geological history of a region, and particularly of the succession of three conditions:
- The accumulation of organic matter, mainly vegetal.
- Its maturation into hydrocarbons
- Its imprisonment.
In the late Cretaceous, Alberta was covered by the Western Interior Seaway (just like Texas) and it was a major contributing factor for the presence of oil. It allowed a massive accumulation of organic matter at the bottom of the sea that was then covered for millions of years by sedimentation.
The presence of important oil fields in Alberta was then long presumed but it took many attempts to find the first one. On February 13, 1947, the 300,000,000 barrel Leduc Oil Field was discovered with this derrick!

La présence de pétrole dans le sous-sol albertain est incontestablement une raison majeure du développement économique de la région. Les Edmontoniens sont fiers de leurs racines, de leur climat et de leur réputation de travailleurs ! Ils affichent ostensiblement cette fierté en ayant nommé leurs deux équipes principales de hockey-sur-glace les Oilers (LNH) et les Oil Kings (WHL) !
Mais ce pétrole… c’est quoi et comment est-il arrivé là ?
Le pétrole est un produit de l'histoire géologique d’une région, et particulièrement de la succession de trois conditions :
- L'accumulation de matière organique, végétale essentiellement
- Sa maturation en hydrocarbures
- Son emprisonnement.
A la fin du Crétacé, l’Alberta était recouvert par la Voie Maritime Intérieure de l’Ouest (comme le Texas). Ce fût un élément déterminant dans la formation de pétrole en Alberta. En effet, cela a permis une accumulation massive de matière organique au fond de l’océan. Ce dépôt fût ensuite recouvert par des sédiments pendant des millions d’années.
Beaucoup étaient persuadés de la presence de champs pétrolifères importants en Alberta mais il a fallu attendre le 13 février 1947 pour que ce derrick soit l’instrument de la découverte du champ de pétrole de 300 000 000 barils de Leduc !
