Geocache Description:

Ants

You will be able to see hundreds of ant hills along the route. Each ant hill is a colony and the typical colony consists of one or more egg-llaying queens, a large number of sterile females (workers, soldiers) and, seasonally, a large number of winged sexual males and females. In order to establish new colonies, ants undertake nuptial flights that occur at species-characteristic times of the day. Swarms of the winged sexuals (known as alates) depart the nest in search of other nests. The males die shortly thereafter, along with most of the females.A small percentage of the females survive to initiate new nests.

Ants can be found on all continents of earth except Antarctica (pardon the pun) and come in many different varieties each adapted for its own environment. Ants are omnivourous and can eat nearly anything.

If all the ants on earth can be concentrated on one spot, the total weight will be so heavy that it can influence the turning of the planet!

If you see them, stop and watch them closely...they are extraordinary insects!!
