Description

Struthio camelus

The worlds largest living bird. Males are black with white wings and females are brownish grey.

Size

Up to 2 m tall.

Habitat

Bushveld, grasslands and desert.

Habits

Eggs are white/ivory coloured and are laid in nests in the ground. Both parents tends to the eggs untill the chicks hatch. Ostriches excretes large quantities of fluids mixed with solids. Ureum makes the excretions a white colour. They can be aggressive during the breeding season. The large nail at the front of the big toe is an extremely dangerous weapon.

Food

They eat grass,berries, seeds, succulents, small reptiles and insects.
