Tarentaal ( Guinea Fowl)



Numida meleagris

This is an easy identifiable, charcoal grey bird with dense white spots. The naked skin on the head is usually blue with varying parts of red around the eyes.

It also has a horny helm on its crown. They normally occur in flocks. They feed on termites, beetles and seeds. They are normally on the ground but can fly short distances.

They lay between 6-8 eggs on the ground in dense vegitation.

Length: 54-58cm.

These birds are sensitive to agricultural pesticides and their presence or lack thereoff is an indication of the health of the environment.
