Fish Passes and Weirs During restoration of the Gardens, new features have been added to benefit the local ecology. Jellicoe’s design involved widening the River Gade and adding weirs along its length to make the water flow look and sound attractive. Water quality has now been improved by removing silt and ‘fish passes’ have also been installed. A fish pass is a series of shallow stepped pools which break up the change in the water level at the weir. Fish are then able to navigate the weir in shorter jumps and move up and down stream more freely. Jellicoe’s original scheme included areas of marginal planting around the edges of the water. These have been reintroduced using species well suited to the conditions, such as irises and sedges, to provide habitats for fish and invertebrates. In addition, new native plants have been introduced along the edge of the Southern Lake. The new layout of the Flower Garden now attracts an abundance of wildlife. Plants with prolonged flowering periods provide nectar and pollen for butterflies and other insects. The wooded Lovers’ Walk provides a nesting habitat and berries for birds, as well as a foraging area for small mammals.
