My memories of growing up in Littleton during the 50/60's was so different as compared to today. The norm was to be outdoors. At the time television was just evolving with only 2-3 channels to watch, so there little reason to stay indoors. Parents would encourage their children to go outside, make friends and play. So we did. We played baseball, explored, swam, fished, built forts, went sledding or just hung out.
Pickerel Rock</>
On virtually any given day one could spot someone fishing off of Pickerel Rock located on the south shoreline of Long Lake. Pickerel Rock anchored an old stone wall and back in the day one could walk via a path right to it where water only lapped at the front edge. However, with the return of beavers, the lake is much higher and now impossible to access without getting wet. Legend has it the spike located on the front edge of Pickerel Rock was where one end of a boom was secured during ice harvesting season. Many a pickerel was caught there. The picture was taken from Bass Rock. Now I wonder why it's called Bass Rock?
Limited parking is at the trailhead for Long Lake Park. Follow the Yellow blazed trail until your GPS beckons, cross the stone wall opening and follow the stone wall to GZ. You will be looking for a winter friendly camo pill bottle.
