This painting may be seen in Gallery 204 (Renaissance art) at the museum.

"The Virgin and Child with Angels Appearing to Saints Anthony Abbot & Paul, the Hermit" was painted by Paolo Caliari, called Veronese, in 1562. Born the son of a Verona stonemason, Veronese established himself in Venice in 1553 and rapidly assumed a commanding position among the painters of the island republic.

This was one of 3 large altarpieces commissioned for the monastery church of San Benedetto Po, near Mantua. They were completed in only 3 months' time & installed in adjoining chapels in the sumptuous church. They were removed from the church by Napoleon's troops shortly after the occupation of Mantua at the end of the 18th century.

The Museum's painting celebrates the lives of two early Christian hermit saints, Anthony Abbot (A.D. 251-356) & Paul, the Hermit (A.D. 229- 342). As founders of the monastic life, both enjoyed a special reverence among the monks of San Benedetto Po. According to early Christian lore, Anthony Abbot renounced all of his earthly goods at the age of 20 and retired to the Egyptian desert, where he embraced a solitary life of penance & prayer. When he reached the age of 90, he believed himself to be the oldest hermit. But he was surprised to learn, through a vision, that another recluse - Paul, the Hermit - had lived in desert isolation for a longer time than he. Anthony sought out Paul, and the two men lived together until Paul died at the age of 113.

In his altarpiece, Veronese depicted an imaginary scene in which the saints are honored for their exemplary lives with a miraculous vision. In a burst of golden light, the Madonna & Child in Glory swoop down upon the desert where the old men are startled from their prayers. Anthony Abbot lurches forward on his crutch, his rosary lifted in his hand, while Paul the Hermit clutches his heart, the heavy volume of scriptures still balanced on his lap. The sharply foreshortened figures suggest that the altarpiece was designed to be viewed from below.

Veronese's genius as a colorist is splendidly displayed in the handling of the Virgin's & angels' cloaks, which offer a joyful bouquet of silvery blue, emerald green & lemon yellow hues. Unlike his rival Tintoretto, who evoked in his later paintings a spiritual realm of phantom shapes, Veronese celebrated the solidity & splendor of the material world. He exulted in the decorative allure of lavish costumes & clear, jewel-like colors uncompromised by the tonal concerns of other Venetian masters.
