Geocache Description:

Estimated time to complete: 30 min
Estimated distance to travel: 300m

Your challenge is to find the lost grave of Little Lucy, located somewhere near Oakleigh Pioneer Memorial Park. To do this, you will need to complete four tasks in order, visiting information boards, graves and memorial bricks as you do so. For convenience, the tasks can be done as a series of mini-challenges over a number of visits, checking your answers as you go.

Park information
Please be respectful as you walk around the park, remembering it was formerly the Oakleigh General Cemetery. The site is now managed in keeping with the late 19th century (1859-1909) period of significance. It is one of the first public cemeteries established in Victoria in the 1850s, and is one of five Memorial Parks in the State. There are 2500 people buried here, many of them children.

Significant features include:
▪️Formal elliptical path layout c. 1860
▪️Collection of memorials, some from the 1860s, which are associated with district pioneers
▪️Indigenous Coast Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis ssp. prioriana)
▪️Remnant indigenous grasses and naturalised exotic flowering species, which are associated with early graveside plantings

Task 1 - find three dates and a grave
The listed coordinates will bring you to the main information boards. Here you will need to find three dates and the location of a grave.

A: 198A Official opening of the Oakleigh Pioneer Memorial Park
B: 192B Soldiers Memorial (RSL) Hall
C: 192C Oakleigh Post Office

The grave you need to find is that of Henrietta Akehurst, founder of Korowa Anglican Girls’ School. The mini map on the board will guide you to it (the small spot is the current location, the large spot is the grave site).

At the grave site collect the following numbers from the stone:

D: Number of consonants in Henrietta’s middle name
F: Died 190F
G: Number of letters on the sixth line

Checksum A+B+C+D+F+G = 30

Task 2 - find another grave
Use the numbers you have obtained thus far to locate another grave at the following coordinates:

S 37 53.ABC E 145 05.DFG

The headstone of this second grave commemorates a family of four.
Q: Total number of vowels in the firstborn son’s first and second names
N: Number of letters in the parents’ names as listed together at the top
HKJ: Firstborn son died in 19H1 aged KJ years
P: Number of letters in secondborn son’s first name
M: Father died on the M6th Feb
L: Mother died aged 9L years

Grouping this second set of letters into alphabetical pairs should give you four 2-digit numbers: HJ, KL, MN, PQ

Checksum HJ+KL+MN+PQ = 85

Task 3 - find three bricks
Return to the starting information boards and find the memorial brick paving nearby. Your four 2-digit numbers will identify two of these bricks - one will give you Little Lucy’s southerly coordinates, the other will give you her easterly coordinates.

▪️reference brick
To begin, you must find the brick for "M BLEVIN 31-10-1889 84 YRS WES". This will be your reference brick at the lower left corner of the paving. It is the brick from which all your counting will start.
NOTE: The reference brick counts as zero. Brick number one is the next brick along. When counting, include blank bricks and be sure to make allowances for any missing bricks. You will need to imagine a complete array of bricks without any concrete present.

▪️southerly brick
Starting at the reference brick count HJ bricks to the right and KL bricks going up.
RTU: Date 2R-T2-194U

▪️easterly brick
Starting at the reference brick count MN bricks to the right and PQ bricks going up.
VWX: Date 0V-0W-19X4

Checksum: R+T+U+V+W+X = 23

Task 4 - find the grave of Little Lucy
Use this last set of numbers to rediscover Little Lucy’s lost grave (and the cache) at the following coordinates:

S 37 53.RTU  E 145 05.VWX

Good luck!
