Geocache Description:

Holybred Wood is an area of 21 acres of ancient woodland in the village of Little Baddow. It comprises mostly hornbeam coppice, oak, sweet chestnut, birch and holly with an under-storey containing bluebell and wood anemone. The wood is a haven for many types of wildlife including badgers.

The wood is on the route of the Admiral McHardy walk which is a beautiful walk of some 9 miles taking in Holybred Wood, Lingwood Common, Graces Walk, Woodham Walter Common, Heather Hills and a stretch of the canal. It is named in honour of Captain John Bunch Bonnemaison McHardy who founded the Essex Police force and was appointed Chief Constable on 11 February 1840. It celebrates 150 years of policing in Essex. In those days it was very common for military men to become Chief Police Officers and although he had left the navy, it was also common practice for such officers to continue to receive naval promotions. McHardy had joined the navy at 11 years old.

The WheezeyTeam have a close affinity with the wood. In 2000, a fundraising appeal was held in order to purchase the wood for the benefit of the village in perpetuity and is managed by Little Baddow Parish Council. At the time of the appeal one of the WheezeyTeam was a resident of Little Baddow and so contributed to the appeal. We hope you enjoy discovering "our wood"

Due to the cache location, GPS is a little sporadic. We will keep the coordinates under review.

This was taken from just to the left of the cache location.

You will need a pen and possibly tweezers although, with care, a pen should extract the log.

The wood has its own small car park on Holybred Lane or there is more parking in nearby Spring Close.
