In 1909, Appleton received a gift from George C. Jones, which was a ravine "to be forever used as a public park and playground."
Jones Park was a favorite of children for summertime snowball fights. Because of the depth of the ravine, snow would sometimes linger until the Fourth of July. Jones was also one of the first parks in the city to be developed specifically for sports purposes. It had ice rinks in the winter and baseball and playground facilities for the summer.
In the late 1950s, Jones Park was eyed as a possible site for a new city hall and/or civic center complex. This came to a hault when wording was discovered in the deed stating that if the land were used for anything other than a park, ownership would revert back to the Jones family. In 1960, the Jone's family only surviving heir, a daughter-in-law, stated in a letter to the city that "the land would be more valuable for other purposes."
We lay witness to this today, as the new Fox Cities Exhibition Center is being constructed on the north end of Jones Park. It is scheduled to open in early January 2018. Jones park is due to undergo renovations in early 2018 and the city hopes for it to open at the end of summer 2018.
