We love to play Cribbage. One of the best things about the game is it is one of the few great cards games that can be played with just two people. We both grew up playing the game and have played it many times together as a couple. We’ve also passed along the game to both of our kids. Some of Mrs. Hack1of2’s fondest memories include the daily cribbage games she used to have with her dad when he was still with us. He was a great card player and he played with a grace in his latter years that had never been part of his earlier years of playing the game.

Cribbage is a card game traditionally for two players, but can also be played with three players, or even four as partners. It involves playing and grouping cards in combinations which gain points. Cribbage has several distinctive features: the cribbage board used for score-keeping, the crib – an extra but separate hand counting for the dealer - two distinct scoring stages and a unique scoring system including points for groups of cards that total fifteen.

In Cribbage the goal is to achieve certain groupings of cards which gain the player points. There are many different variations players can throw into the mix, so don’t be surprised if the version of Cribbage you learned first, isn’t the one used by another when you sit down to play with them for the first time. The goal of the game is to be the first player to reach a score of 121.

As already mentioned, one of the most novel features of Cribbage is that a Cribbage board is used for scoring rather than the usual pencil and paper. The (usually) rectangular wooden board is equipped with holes that accommodate 121 pegs per player. The board speeds up scoring, and in this fast-moving game, pegging greatly reduces the chances for errors in computing scores.

Cribbage is a popular game, and features deep and complex play, with its iconic scoreboard making it even more recognizable.
