Spoons is a card game we both have enjoyed ever since we were kids. It does not require much skill or strategy but really is about having fun with friends. It is an easy game for both adults and kids to learn to play. We have had many good laughs over the years playing this game, and the more players the better!
Spoons also goes by a variety of other names as well, but the fundamental rules are the same – be fast and be sneaky! It is essentially a card game version of musical chairs. The goal is to grab one of the spoons that are placed in the middle of the table after you or someone else gets four of a kind. The problem is that there aren’t enough spoons for everyone!
- Materials Required: A standard deck of 52 playing cards, several spoons (one less than the total number of players).
- Number of Players: 4-8 is recommended.
- Length of Game: Games are fairly quick – about 5-10 minutes per game.
HOW TO PLAY SPOONS
Arrange the spoons in a small circle in the center of the table and deal four cards to each player. Each player tries to make four of a kind. The dealer takes a card off the top of the deck to have five cards in his hand, removes one and passes it facedown to the player on the left. Each player discards to the person on his left. The last player places his discard into a trash pile. Cards are picked up and passed quickly around the table until someone gets four of a kind and takes a spoon from the center. Once the player with four of a kind takes a spoon, anyone can take a spoon. The player left without a spoon gets a letter. If at any time the draw cards run out, pause to reshuffle the trash pile and keep going. When a player gets the letters S-P-O-O-N-S they are out of the game.
