My memories of growing up in Littleton during the 50/60's was so different as compared to today. The norm was to be outdoors. At the time television was just evolving with only 2-3 channels to watch, so there little reason to stay indoors. Parents would encourage their children to go outside, make friends and play. So we did. We played baseball, explored, swam, fished, built forts, went sledding or just hung out.
The Cove
The cove was a mysterious yet wondrous location on the southern shore of Long Lake not far from Pickerel Rock. One could hike via the Pickerel Rock trail to the beginning of the cove, but not much farther due to thick bush and swamps protecting any way to cross to the other side. However, with a row boat we would fish and explore the far side known as The Point. I recall as a preteen I was given the opportunity to visit an underground fort built by older teens! A friend and I were blindfolded so we wouldn't know the exact location and led to the fort. We were overawed when allowed in the fort, but were warned to tell no one else its existence. We were then re-blindfolded and led back to the boat. It is a great memory. At the end of the point was a spot where kids would erect a pup tent and "camp out" overnight. It was also a great spot for a picnic.
