Just over a mile along easy flat track to old mine workings. Park in the area of N54º23.637 W002º01.090

Hard Level (originally called Force Level ) was first cut in 1777. It was driven up the valley to reach a section of ore thought to be very rich. The miners drove the level by hand for about 13 years, at an average of 75 yards per year before reaching any ore! This was due mainly to the way the hard limestone beds dipped and had to be dug through rather then over or under . The output from the level was good for the first 20 years, but as major expenditure was obvious to extend it's output, it was leased, along with other mines in the area, for a rent of £2163 a year in advance and one fifth of all the lead produced. In 1857, 571 tons of ore was brought out of Hard Level, by 1911 this had dropped to two hundredweight during the first six months. The Hard level and other mines nearby closed soon after.
