Fifteenth in a series of caches highlighting the art of Norfolk's Chrysler Museum, One Memorial Place, Norfolk, VA 23510. The Chrysler Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday from Noon to 5 pm. Admission is Free. Website: www.chrysler.org. This suit of armor may be seen in Gallery 106 at the museum.
Samurai Armor, Japanese (1800–1900 c.e.) made of lacquered iron, gilding, copper, chain mail, silk, cotton, and paper.
As the elite soldiers of a daimyo, or feudal lord, samurai were expected to exemplify dignity through their appearance. Craftsmen used lamellar, or metal plate construction, to give the armor its flexibility and scale-like appearance. They also decorated the armor and helmet with family crests to indicate who commissioned it. Look for the fans with crossed feathers and tassels. The motif indicates this suit was made for the Iwaki family of Akita Province, Japan
The metal is overlaid with printed textile with mythological animals on it. The body is assembled with purple cording, a skirt of navy, and silver and rose brocade. The sleeves are covered with wire mesh chain mail. The body armor is of the "Nuinobe-Do" type of the 19th century. The helmet is of the "Suji-bachi-no-kabuto" type, from the first half of the 19th century.
