Geocache Description:

On this site from 1902 to 1985, stood the impressive 4 storey Links hotel. with a copper-clad cupola topped with by a huge globe which had previously stood on the site.

The original hotel was built to capitalise on the visits of wealthy golfers to the nearby, newly openned golf club. However, in practice, many of the players chose to return to London in their 'new-fangled' motor cars instead.

Due to the lack of custom, the upper, hotel part of the building fell into disrepair and as early as the 1940's was unihabitable, except for the pigeons that roosted there.

The Links continued to trade as a public house until  March 1980.

It was finally demolished in 1985, but the cupola was removed intact and taken to Virginia in USA where it graced a large private house.
