De Gentpoort - Gate of Ghent

De Gentpoort is een van Brugges vier bewaarde middeleeuwse stadspoorten. Voor vreemden een toegang tot de stad, voor Bruggelingen een grens met de buitenwereld.
De poort moest de stad verdedigen, maar fungeerde ook als doorgang voor goederen die in- of uitgevoerd werden.
Let op het beeld in de nis boven de doorgang: dat is de heilige Adriaan, die Brugge tegen de pest moest beschermen.

De Gentpoort is op zijn mooist ’s avonds, wanneer hij volop in de schijnwerpers staat.

The Gate of Ghent is one of four remaining medieval city gates. An entrance for foreigners, a border with the outside world for the inhabitants of Bruges.
The gate was a part of the city’s defences as well as a passageway for the movement of produce and merchandise.
Note the statue in the niche above the roadway: this is Saint Adrian, who was believed to protect the city during times of plague.

The Gate of Ghent is at its most beautiful in the evening, when it is quite literally in the spotlights.
