"The Battle of Okinawa began on March 26,1945 when the first US forces landed at Zamami Village, many people lost their lives here. In March 1958 the Tower of Peace was erected on the side of Mt. Takatsuki, overlooking the islands of Aka and Geruma. Here at the Tower of Peace, the spirits more than 1200 deceased soldiers and civilians are worshiped as gods of peace. In 1995 a memorial was built around the tower and engraved with the names of the war dead, begining with the villagers who perished, to remind all of the pricelessness of peace."
