G-Gache also stands for “Gurten”, which is the name of Bern’s own little mountain (well, more like a big hill…) and the place where the famous Gurtenfestival takes place every year.
At Bern main station take the tram number 9 in direction of “Wabern” and leave it at the station called “Gurtenbahn” and follow the signs. Or park your car at the parking located at N46 55.692 E7 26.781. There you can decide how to ascend the Gurten. You can either walk a good hour, bike some 30 minutes or ride with the rather pricy cable-car to reach the top. Walking and biking up will bring you very near to the cache before reaching the top. If you ride up, you’ll need to walk downwards to find the cache. Many people ride up and walk down, but it’s up to you. However, the cache’s location is not on the main part of the Gurten, so if you ride up the easy way, you’ll need to walk down again something like one km or so. But that really is no big deal.
The Gurten is 858 meters high and offers various attractions; many for kids. There’s a big playground, a small train to ride on and even some little electro go-carts. For those who claim to be adult, there’s the splendid view of Bern and the whole region around. When the weather’s clear you can see the Alps on the south side. There’s also some restaurants, cafés and even a hotel. You can picknick everywhere and, if you’re lucky, you may even find one of many grills to be free and waiting for your steaks!
But be aware of the Gurten’s popularity when the weather’s nice and hot; you won’t be alone very often. Especially remember this when seeking for the cache!
We really don’t want it to be found and maybe even destroyed by some outsiders, do we? So be careful and watch out for dry branches.
Now, let’s talk cache.
You’re looking for a dark green Swiss Army ammo box with very ugly painted (by me…) geocaching URLs on it, wrapped in a tough clear plastic bag. The box’ inside size of 29x14x17 cm (LxWxD) is rather large and allows you to place many nice gifts for the next cachers! Be sure to close it well, as this will seal it pretty good and keep everything dry inside. The cache is placed in a classic cache-location and you won’t need to dig around this time. Accuracy was quite good (6 m) when the cache was placed. However, there is more than one fine hiding place around. You may find it fast, but you may also spend some time looking for it... Enjoy anyway!
Once you've mastered the cache, you may visit the spot N46 54.839 / E7 26.988 where you’ll find some benches and a picknick table, just in case you want to sit down and/or feel hungry…!
