A hidden gem of a pond, courtesy of our friends the hydraulic miners.
Gold Pond is now a lovely, peaceful nature study area, but its origin is anything but natural and quiet. This part of the Parkway was the only area on the lower American River where hydraulic mining occurred. Giant water guns called monitors were used to blast away the hillsides. This pond is believed to have been part of a ditch system that fed the monitors. Now it is home to pond turtles and other creatures and a nice place for a stroll.
There are several ways to get there. You can pay the $4 county fee and park very close. The nicer, unexpectedly scenic and placid way is to park (for free) on Illinois just before it goes into the park. Take one of the trails right by the signs on your right.
The container is a roundish plastic about eight inches in diameter. It is full of nature-related items, so please keep with the theme.
