Il Forte Bastione fu costruito tra il 1885 e il 1889 come parte delle fortificazioni volte a proteggere la costa del Mar Ligure, e in particolare l'arsenale della Spezia, da possibili invasioni nemiche via mare. È costruito sul Monte Bastione a 690 metri sul livello del mare, sul confine tra Toscana e Liguria, nei comuni di Fosdinovo, Carrara, Castelnuovo Magra e Ortonovo. Durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale non sparò nemmeno un colpo, ma fu utilizzato come campo di prigionia per i soldati austriaci. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale fu occupato dalle truppe tedesche, che lo utilizzarono per rallentare l'avanzata dell'esercito statunitense fino all'aprile del 1945. Il forte fu bombardato il 15 aprile 1945 e conquistato dalle truppe statunitensi.
L'ingresso al forte avveniva attraverso un ponte levatoio, andato distrutto; oggi si può accedere mediante una passerella in legno e ferro, alquanto fatiscente. Il forte è organizzato su tre piani; è ancora possibile vedere l'architettura dell'edificio, anche se gran parte dei pavimenti sono crollati. Se volete esplorare il forte, fate molta attenzione; in particolare si sconsiglia di entrare negli edifici sui quali non viene fatta manutenzione da decenni. Per accedere al forte vi consiglio di prendere il sentiero CAI che parte dalla strada provinciale Carrara-Fosdinovo (SP 73, ex SS 446) all'altezza del bivio per Vallecchia/Castelnuovo Magra. Dal sentiero si possono godere ottimi panorami sulla costa del Mar Ligure, sulla bassa Val di Magra, e sulle Alpi Apuane.
La cache è un contenitore in plastica di tipo lock and lock, nascosto al di fuori del forte, pertanto non è necessario superare la passerella per trovare la cache. Contiene logbook, matita, ed è possibile scambiare oggetti. Per favore riponetelo nella stessa posizione. Buona ricerca!
Fort Bastione was built between 1885 and 1889 as part of the fortifications to protect the coast of the Ligurian Sea, and in particular the Spezia arsenal, from possible enemy invasions by sea. It is built on Mount Bastione at 690 meters above sea level, on the border between Tuscany and Liguria, in the municipalities of Fosdinovo, Carrara, Castelnuovo Magra and Ortonovo. During the First World War the fort did not even shoot a shot, but was used as a prison camp for Austrian soldiers. During the Second World War it was occupied by the German troops, who used it to slow down the advancement of the US Army until April 1945. The fort was bombed on April 15, 1945 and conquered by US troops.
Entry to the fort took place through a drawbridge, now destroyed; today it can be accessed by a wooden and iron catwalk, somewhat dilapidated. The fort is organized on three floors; you can still see the architecture of the building, although most of the floors have collapsed. If you want to explore the fort, be careful; in particular it is not advisable to enter buildings that have not been maintained for decades. To get to the fort I recommend taking the CAI trail that starts from the Carrara-Fosdinovo provincial road (SP 73, former SS 446) at the junction towards Vallecchia and Castelnuovo Magra. From the trail you can enjoy great views of the coast of the Ligurian Sea, the low Magra valley, and the Apuan Alps.
The cache is a lock and lock plastic container, hidden outside the fort, so it is not necessary to overcome the bridge to find the cache. It contains logbook, pencil, and you can swap objects. Please place it back in the same position. Happy geocaching!
