Chi non ha mai sognato, almeno una volta nella vita, di fare tredici al totocalcio?
Who has not dreamed, at least once in his lifetime, to make thirteen at Totocalcio pools?

Per almeno un paio di generazioni di italiani il numero tredici è sempre stato associato alla schedina del Totocalcio e al desiderio di indovinare la magica combinazione di 1 X e 2 che avrebbe cambiato per sempre la propria vita!
In realtà quando il 5 maggio 1946 debuttò la schedina si chiamava Sisal ed era costituita da dodici risultati da pronosticare tra le partite del campionato di calcio italiano.
Un’idea semplice e geniale, pensata dal giornalista triestino Massimo Della Pergola durante il periodo di prigionia in un campo svizzero e sviluppata con i colleghi Fabio Jegher e Geo Molo. Il progetto iniziale nato come un passatempo popolare per finanziare la rinascita dello sport italiano nel magro periodo del dopoguerra ebbe subito un enorme successo tanto da conquistare in breve il paese intero.
Il primo vincitore fu Emilio Biasotti, autore di un dodici da 426mila lire; nel 1948 il governo italiano nazionalizzò la schedina ribattezzandola Totocalcio e tre anni dopo il numero degli eventi da pronosticare salì a 13.


In pochissimo tempo le giocate toccarono le 13 milioni di colonne (a 30 lire ciascuna) e il montepremi continuò ad aumentare fino ad arrivare al record dei primi anni Novanta. A dicembre del 1993 la posta in palio arrivò a 34,4 miliardi di lire e appena un mese prima il Totocalcio assegnò la sua vincita più alta, oltre 5,5 miliardi di lire a tre fortunati scommettitori.
Da allora il fascino della schedina si è progressivamente offuscato: la moltiplicazione dei concorsi, la legalizzazione delle scommesse, i montepremi da sogno del Superenalotto e l’entrata in scena di altri giochi, hanno messo in secondo piano il Totocalcio, nel frattempo passato sotto la gestione dei Monopoli di Stato nel 2002.
A partire dalla stagione 2003-2004 la formula del Totocalcio venne modificata per cercare di rilanciare il concorso: le partite da pronosticare passarono da 13 a 14 e fu introdotto il concorso parallelo "Il 9".
Il rito della schedina è entrato a pieno merito nella storia del costume italiano anche se ormai sono rimasti abbastanza pochi gli italiani che tentano la fortuna giocando al Totocalcio.

At the debut, on May 5, 1946, it was called Sisal and consisted of twelve results to be predicted among the matches of the Italian football league.
A simple and brilliant idea, conceived by the journalist Massimo Della Pergola during the period of imprisonment in a Swiss camp and developed with colleagues Fabio Jegher and Geo Molo. The initial project, born as a popular pastime to finance the rebirth of Italian sport in the post-war period, was a huge success so much so that it soon won over the entire country.
The first winner was Emilio Biasotti, author of a twelve of 426 thousand lire; in 1948 the Italian government nationalized the game renaming it Totocalcio and three years after the number of events to be predicted went up to 13.
In a very short time the games touched the 13 million columns (to 30 lire each) and the prize money continued to increase until reaching the record of the early nineties. In December 1993 the stakes were up to 34.4 billion lire and just a month before the Totocalcio awarded its highest winnings, over 5.5 billion lire to three lucky bettors.
Since then the charm of Totocalcio has gradually become blurred: the multiplication of competitions, the legalization of bets, the Superenalotto's dream jackets and the entry into the scene of other games, have put the Totocalcio in the background, in the meantime passed under the management of State Monopolies in 2002.
Starting from the 2003-2004 season the Totocalcio formula was modified to try to re-launch the competition: the games to be predicted passed from 13 to 14 and the parallel competition "Il 9" was introduced.
Now the Italians who try their luck playing Totocalcio have remained quite a few, fascinated more than anything else by that rite of the ticket that has entered fully into the history of Italian costume.
