Un Mundo Feliz es la habitual traducción al español del título de la más famosa novela de Aldous Huxley, Brave New World. Este autor estuvo muy de moda en el período de entreguerras pero ahora ha quedado un tanto olvidado, aunque algunos siguen considerándole como uno de los más grandes escritores del siglo pasado.

Al margen de su mayor o menor calidad literaria, lo que es indiscutible es que Huxley fue un pionero en alertar sobre el impacto de la tecnología en la vida cotidiana y la ambivalencia de sus resultados; en concreto en la novela mencionada presenta irónicamente un futuro en el que la alternativa es vivir en una sociedad primitiva como nuestros antepasados prehistóricos o ser una marioneta manejada por el Gobierno Mundial, eso sí, con felicidad garantizada (o casi).

Aunque Huxley fue derivando hacia posiciones bastante anticientíficas en algunas áreas, y al final de su vida se dejó engañar por alguna secta, es innegable que sus mejores escritos muestran una excepcional capacidad de anticipación en varias áreas, como las tecnologías reproductivas o el condicionamiento de masas.

Algunas veces pienso que vería con humor y cierta alarma el entorno en que vivimos, casi ya un siglo tras la publicación de su famosa novela, en que - gracias a los gigantes internéticos, a la abundancia de cámaras en las calles, al software de reconocimiento de caras y voz, los teléfonos y coches rastreables, y otras tecnologías paralelas - muchas organizaciones, no todas benignas, pueden saber de nosotros más que nosotros mismos, sin que podamos controlar el uso que hacen de estos datos. Aunque no parece de momento que ello nos vaya a llevar a una distopía como la retratada por Huxley, por si acaso no está de más que de vez en cuando reflexionemos sobre ello, y Brave New World es una buena y entretenida forma de hacerlo.

Un Mundo Feliz is the usual translation to Spanish of the title of Aldous Huxley’s most famous novel, Brave New World. Though very much in fashion in the interwar period, Huxley is somewhat forgotten these days, even if some critics still consider him one of the best writers of last century.

Independently of his literary stature, what is undeniable is that Huxley anticipated, and shrewdly analysed, the ambivalent impact of technology in our lives; this novel paints ironically a future world where the choice is living like a prehistoric man or being manipulated like a puppet by a powerful World Government, which at least (nearly) guarantees you will be happy.

In his later life Huxley turned to some anti scientific theories, but his earlier writings show a remarkable capacity to anticipate technological advances, in areas such as reproductive techniques or mass psychological manipulation.

I think sometimes that he would be amused, and somewhat alarmed, by the environment where we live, less than a century after the publication of this novel. Thanks to the internet giants, the all-pervading CCTVs, the widespread use of face recognition and voice recognition software, the trackable phones and cars, and other similar technologies, various organizations (not all of them benign) increasingly know a lot about us, and we cannot control how they use this knowledge. It doesn’t look yet like we are on our way to a dystopian future like the one shown by Huxley, but, just in case, it may be a good idea to think from time to time on this, and Brave New World is a good, and entertaining, way to do it.
