The 'Ball Drop' ceremony is held in New York's Times Square each new year's eve. It is attended by many thousands of revellers and was first held in 1907. The actual ball drop itself is anaval tradition, however. Thety were designed as a signal to ships at sea pr in harbour form the mainland to mark midday so that ghey could synchronise their clocks to local time and so measure longitude accurately once at sea. A large red ball decended a flagpole and came to rest at exactly midday. the Times Square Ball drop starts at 11.59 and comes to rest at the stroke of midnight.
