Under Skånska kriget 1675-1679 deltog fästningen i Göteborgs försvar mot danska angrepp och under senare delen av stora nordiska kriget var den 1717-1719 inblandad i strider med dansk-norska sjöstyrkor under ledning av amiral Peder Tordenskjold. När fästningen senare på 1700-talet minskade i betydelse som militär anläggning, användes den i stället i ökande grad som fängelse fram till 1866. Under första världskriget hade fästningen rollen som minförråd, som en del i försvaret av Göteborgs hamn. During the Skåne War of 1675-1679, the fortress participated in Gothenburg's defense against Danish attacks and during the latter part of the Great Nordic War, 1717-1719 was involved in fighting Danish- norwegian naval forces under the direction of the Peder Tordenskjold amiral. When the fortress later in the 18th century fell in importance as a military facility, it was increasingly used as a prison until 1866. During the First World War, the fortress had the role of mining, as part of the defense of the port of Gothenburg.
