Why does Lex Luthor hate Superman?
The idea that Luthor hates Superman because he is "holding us back" or "meddling in human affairs" is a popular idea when it comes to discussing Luthor's motivations, but its not the truth. It is ultimately a lie that Lex has told so often he's even started to believe it himself. The real reason Lex hates Superman is that Luthor has worked himself ragged his entire life to get where he is. A kid born with nothing in Suicide Slum became the most powerful man in Metropolis and one of the richest men in the world, but he has had to sacrifice for all of it. Then one day, Superman shows up and Lex knows that no matter how much work he does, no matter how much he sweats and bleeds, no matter what he does, he will always be #2. He can never have the power Superman possesses and Luthor simply can't deal with the idea that he will never be on top. Lex doesn't care about the advancement of humanity, his only interest is self-interest. In his mind Superman isn't holding humanity back, Superman is holding him back.
