“Em 1457, o Papa Calisto III enviou a D. Afonso V a bula da Cruzada contra os Turcos. E com o grande desejo e louvado alvoroço que El-Rei tinha para esta santa viagem mandou novamente lavrar d'ouro fino subido em toda a perfeição, a moeda dos cruzados, em cujo peso e não preço mandou sobre todos os ducados da cristandade acrescentar dois grãos por tal que por terras tão alongadas e nações tão diversas como as que porque esperava de passar corressem e se tomassem sem alguma dúvida; porque em seu tempo e d'El-Rei D.Duarte seu pai, de ouro não se lavrou outra moeda, salvo escudos d'ouro baixo, que em reinos estranhos se tomavam com grande quebra e muito pejo”.

And with the great desire and praise that the King had for this holy journey, he commanded again to make fine gold in all perfection, the coin of the Crusaders, whose weight and not the price he demanded, over all the duchies of Christendom, to add more two grains, so that, for the lands elongated and nations as diverse as those which he hoped to pass, would run and be taken without any doubt; because in his time and of the King D.Duarte his father, of gold was not carved another coin, except shields of low gold, which in strange kingdoms were taken with great breakage and great modesty”.

O cruzado é uma moeda de ouro de 23 3/4 quilates, 22 mm de diâmetro, um peso de 71 ¼ grãos (3,55g) e valia 253 reais brancos. Tornou-se a principal moeda comercial portuguesa durante mais de 80 anos, vindo a ter boa aceitação tanto no mundo cristão como no muçulmano.
Esta moeda foi cunhada para comemorar a Cruzada contra os Turcos tendo D. Afonso V o cuidado de a mandar fazer com uma valorização que suplantasse a pureza do ducado, na época a moeda mais cobiçada da Europa.
Na própria moeda encontra-se inscrita a palavra com que foram denominados - CRVZATVS, tal a importância que foi dado a este empreendimento. No reverso, também é significativo a inclusão da Cruz de S. Jorge, sendo a primeira vez que a cruz do santo padroeiro de Portugal surge nas moedas portuguesas.

The Crusader is a gold coin of 23 3/4 carats, 22 mm in diameter, weighing 71 ¼ grains (3.55 g) and worth 253 reales white. It has become the main Portuguese commercial currency for more than 80 years, coming to have a good acceptance both in the Christian world and in the Muslim world.
This coin was minted to commemorate the Crusade against the Turks, and Dom Afonso V was careful to have it done with a valorization that would supplant the purity of the duchy, at the time the most coveted coin of Europe.
The word ' CRVZATVS ' is used in the currency itself, as is the importance given to this enterprise. On the other hand, the inclusion of the Cross of St. George is also significant, and it is the first time that the cross of the patron saint of Portugal appears in the Portuguese coins.
