A quick chronology of the history of Hout Bay, named by Jan van Riebeeck during his visit in 1653.The first permit to cut and saw wood was issued in 1668 (Hout means wood). A thriving farming community was established and soon after a thriving fishing industry was established. However, the earliest trace of fishing dates back to between 100 and 500 AD
1488 – 1510 The Portuguese knew this safe anchorage
1607 – A British ship enters the Bay
1652 – 1795 The Dutch and the French
1795 and 1806 The British return
During World War II, a radar station were set up on Karbonkelberg – opposite side of the harbour from where you are standing,
From this vantage point you can see the Bay to your left and the wetlands of the Disa River to your right.
