Geocache Description:

This is the site of the old Monmouth County Gaol which was opened in 1790 and closed in 1869, demolished only 15 years later (apart from the gatehouse which you can see in front of you) the gaol was used to detain criminals from across Monmouthshire and was quite a sizeable site of nearly an acre, comprimising the gaol itself, a chapel, liveing quarters and an infirmary.

It was also the site for public hangings which were conducted on the flat roof of the gatehouse and viewed from the slopes above where the Haberdashers school is now situated. One of them in September 1850 was of two Irishmen, Maurice Murphy and Patrick Sullivan, who were convicted of murder and was watched by 3,000 people, at least four-fifths of which were reported to be women!

Probably the most well-known convicts here were the three Chartist leaders, John Frost, Zephaniah Williams and William Jones, who were imprisoned in the gaol after conviction at the Shire Hall in Monmouth for treason on 16 January 1840.

The Cache

This was originally going to be a just a simple magnetic one on the bench outside the walls but due to it's proximity to the school entrance I have needed to make it into a very easy multi.

So at the above co-ords outside the gaol gates you will see a blue plaque with information about the gaol, use this to answer the quick questions below to get the answers to put into the co-ord formula.

USING THE MAIN ENGLISH TEXT ONLY you will see five year dates:

The last digit in the first year date is A.

Half the last digit in the third year date is B.

The first digit on the last year date is C.

The last digit on the second year date is D.

The third digit in the last year date is E.

The first digit in the fourth year date is F.

So use your answers to get to the cache which is at N 51° 49.ABC W 2° 42.DEF. You can either walk or drive to it as there is very close parking.
