Why re-do a cache that have been archived???

As this was my first cache to find, I decided to re-do this cache (with permission by Evolutionaries).

Bring the kids along to enjoy the slide in particular!

The information bellow is NOT A MUST-READ and does not influence the location or finding of the cache. It only serves a SUMERISED historical background on a few mentionable Drosdys in South Africa...

What is a Drosdy?

It is the office or residence of a landdrost, a Boer magistrate in a rural district of South Africa prior to the establishment of British administration.

The Old Drostdy in Graaff-Reinet,for example, has undergone many changes since construction began in 1804.

Designed by Louis Thibault the building was completed in 1806 and serving as an official building it provided accommodation for inter alia such luminaries as Lord Charles Somerset and Sir Rufane Donkin. From 1819 the Old Drostdy was used as a residency for the local magistrate until 1847 when the building together with the surrounding land was sold by public auction to J.F. Ziervogel.

After having been sub-divided and changed hands a number of times the building was bought by Henry Kromm in 1878 and converted into a hotel which became known as Kromm’s Drostdy Hotel.

About the Drostdy

The Drostdy was built by the Dutch East India Company in 1747 to serve as residence and official headquarters for the Landdrost. Soon after a gaol, a house for the secretary, a mill and various outbuildings were erected.

The first Landdrost to be appointed to this district was Johannes Theophilus Rhenius and he was assisted by a board of burger heemraden and subordinates like secretary and a gaoler as well as many slaves. From 1827 the Drostdy was occupied by the civil commissioner who, with the resident magistrate, replaced the board of Landdrost and heemraden when they were abolished by the British colonial government.

In 1846 the government sold the Drostdy and the property was subdivided. In 1855 the former Drostdy was bought by the Steyn family and it remained in the hands of this family until 1939 when it was bought by the government of the Union of South Africa for the purpose of establishing a museum.

The Drostdy was erected during General Jacob Glen Cuyler’s tenure of office as Landdrost of Uitenhage in 1809 and follows the historical development of Uitenhage and surrounding districts. It houses exhibitions on toys, porcelain, clothing and an archive library.

De Oude Drostdy Museum, Tulbugh

De Oude Drostdy Museum in Tulbagh is a ‘must visit’ which offers visitors a window into the past, while enjoying the very present occupation of sipping wine by candlelight, in what was once the underground slave quarters of this building. The museum, built in 1804, is a typical Cape Dutch style home, originally the magistrate’s residence, which now houses a collection of early Cape furniture, household articles and an unusual collection of gramophones. The building was designed by Cape architect, Louis Michel Thibault, and is now a national monument.

De Oude Drostdy overlooks the Drostdy-Hof wine cellar, producers of New World wines and one of South Africa’s oldest private sherry cellars. De Oude Drostdy serves as Drostdy-Hof’s spiritual home and for many visitors here, De Oude Drostdy has become synonymous with the wine label that began releasing wines in 1973.
