Friends old and new, ushering in the longest night of the year, please join us on Thursday, December 21, from 6-8PM. We'll celebrate the slow return of the sunshine with hot dogs and burgers.
Grab a plate of something warm and perhaps a cup of coffee and celebrate the fact that from here on into summer each day will bring more hours of daylight for caching.
Today the winter solstice is a simple scientific fact. Our hemisphere reaches its furthest tilt away from the sun, causing the longest night of the year and the shortest day. From now until the summer solstice in June, each day will be longer than the one before, and each night shorter.
Well before the astronomical explanation was known, humans in many different cultures nevertheless made note of this annual occurrence and celebrated it with many different ways of symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. Many celebrations involve gathering together around fires which burn all night long on the longest night of the year. To find this event, just allow yourself to be drawn to the yellow light which burns. We will be waiting for you there. DO NOT light any fires in the parking lot, please.
