A series of 5 caches placed so as to enjoy the delights of a ramble through some ancient woodland.
The walk is about 2 miles in total and will take a couple of hours - the paths are easily identified but can be muddy at times - in some places the paths are in close proximity to the riverside so please take care with your geo kids.
The last section of the walk is a narrow downhill track where care needs to be taken especially after wet weather.
Stara Woodland is a collection of three woods; Broad, Colquite and Treovis. Documents suggest they have been here since at least the 17th century, but probably long before that. Each woodland is different in character from the others, ranging from mature conifers intermixed with broadleaved trees, a newer plantation of conifers on what was native woodland, and the remains of old coppices along with more mature oaks.This variety means that the woods play host to, and provide a wonderful habitat for, all kinds of flora, fauna and wildlife.
Species such as the otter, the brown long-eared bat and the dormouse live here. In addition, the woodlands contain historic features, some industrial, discovered through the programme of woodland management and desk based research in local archives.
As you enjoy your walk through the woods you will see many boxes on trees that look like bird boxes - many of them are in fact nest boxes for Dormice - these are gentle and shy creatures - please do not approach or disturb the boxes
Cache Number 1:
From the parking area, proceed along the main path with the River Lynher flowing along on your left. Eventually you will come to the Stara Bridge which is an innovative suspension bridge across the river. Please be aware that some geo-hounds may flatly refuse or may need lots of encouragement to cross this bridge. If you do not like wobbly bridges I recommend that you cross it one at a time - it wobbles a lot less with only one person walking over!!
Once across, proceed along the main, rather muddy footpath, to cache number 1.
It is a good sized box with room for swaps and TBs.
