Geocache Description:

This puzzle is a member of the Map of Victoria GeoArt. It has been placed to coincide with the Parkville Mega.

Fingerprints – we all have them and they are all different. To who can we attribute their use as a fundamental form of identification?
Finger marks have been used as a form of signature in India, Japan and China since antiquity and while the use of a fingerprint to sign a document is verification of the individual’s identity these ancient prints were no more than a signature.
The modern fingerprint is not just a signature but an identification that can be attributed definitely, demonstrably and irrefutably to a single individual.

Thomas TAYLOR a United States Department of Agriculture suggested their use as a means of identifying criminals in 1877.
In 1883 A Californian detective Harry MORSE suggested that Chinese immigrants be identified by thumb marks. However it was in colonial India in the 1850s and 1860s where British Magistrate William HERSCHEL started to use fingerprints as a way of preventing the fraudulent collection of pensions by would be fraudsters.
Interestingly it was a Scottish doctor Henry FAULDS who in the 1873 secured the release of an accused in Japan on the basis that his fingerprints did not match those found at the scene of a crime
