Having decended from Clan Fraser and Clan Kerr it was inevitable that I became interested in all things Tartan!
Tartan is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. Tartans originated in woven wool, but now they are made in many other materials. Tartan is particularly associated with Scotland. Scottish kilts almost always have tartan patterns.
Tartan is made with alternating bands of coloured (pre-dyed) threads woven as both warp and weft at right angles to each other. The weft is woven in a simple twill, two over—two under the warp, advancing one thread at each pass. This forms visible diagonal lines where different colours cross, which give the appearance of new colours blended from the original ones. The resulting blocks of colour repeat vertically and horizontally in a distinctive pattern of squares and lines known as a sett.
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tartan
The Scottish Register of Tartans (SRT) was establish on 5 February 2009 to handle the registration of new tartan designs and the policy surrounding that function and is Scotland's register of tartans. The register itself is made up of the existing registers of the Scottish Tartans Authority (STA) and the Scottish Tartans World Register (STWR) and new registrations from 5 February 2009 and on. i.e. Where tartans were recorded before the establishment of the Scottish Register of Tartans (SRT) on 5 February 2009, the original Scottish Tartans Authority (STA) and the Scottish Tartans World Register (STWR) reference numbers have been retained and a new SRT reference number has been allocated.
Anyone, from anywhere in the world, can register a new tartan (individuals, schools and corporate groups as well as professional designers and weavers) providing that it meets the criteria for registration.
