Geocache Description:

Welcome to the great tradition of the Melbourne pub crawl, redone as a multicache. Whilst there are many great and iconic pubs in Melbourne, this pub crawl doesn’t take in any of them. Maybe that’s one for another day. Today however, you will be following in the footsteps of my 21 year old self, back in the late 1990s. I lived close by to the first pub, my then girlfriend lived close by to the last pub and I worked somewhere in the middle, so I frequented all of these pubs regularly.

There is no need to enter any of the establishments that this geocache takes you to. All of the information that is required can be found from the outside of the building. However, if you do this geocache in the manner that it was intended you will certainly meet some very interesting characters indeed. Also, whilst it is possible to do in a car, I’d recommend ditching it for this one. It’s a 3.5 kilometre walk, or bike ride, best done in the late afternoon/evening and doing this allows you to really take in the neighbourhoods, the iconic buildings and the little nuances of the area.

You start your journey at the published co-ordinates, near a little hotel in Brunswick and work your way around seven different pubs before working out the co-ords for the final geocache. I hope you have fun with this one, and have one for me will ya?

Pub - 1

Near the given co-ordinates is a step that leads into this iconic pub. There are two very prophetic and apt words on the step of the entrance down the side street. Using these words and the formula A=1, B=2, C=3….Z=26, work out…

  • A is (Last letter of second word – first letter of second word)
  • B is (second last letter of first word – second letter of second word)
  • C is (second last letter of second word)
  • D is (first letter of the first word – second last letter of the first word)
  • E is (third letter of the second word – second letter of the second word)
  • F is (first letter of second word)

Pub - 2

The next pub that we are visiting is at S37 46.ABC, E144 57.DEF

Near the calculated co-ordinates is a plaque that places the year this pub was built was GHIJ

Pub - 3

The next pub that we are visiting is at S37 46.J(F+G)(G+I), E144 57.HBJ

Near the next calculated co-ordinates is a small label which reads 3BRU. After that is two numbers, which are both preceded by a 0. These numbers represent the values of K and L, so that the plaque would read 3BRU -0(K) – 0(L)

Pub - 4

The next pub that we are visiting is at S37 4L.EAL, E144 5(I+K).(K-G)IL

On the corner of this intersection where this pub is, there are raised dots on the ground made up in 12 square tiles. How many raised dots are there in total? = MNO

Pub - 5

The next pub that we are visiting is at S37 4L.(L+N)O(M+K), E144 5(M+J).N(G+H)(M+N)

At this location you are looking for the following 88-???, where the ??? represents PQR.

Pub - 6

The next pub that we are visiting is at S37 4L.(K+L)(L+P)(Q-R), E144 5(I+K).L(M+Q)(Q+R)

At this location you are looking for a tag with a five digit number on it. This number can be represented like 2??2?, where the ?s represent the values of STU, so that the tag would look like 2(S)(T)2(U).

Pub - 7

The next pub that we are visiting is at S37 4L.TUM, E144 5F.SSM

Welcome to the final pub. I hope you have enjoyed your pub crawl. At this location you are looking for a yellow sticker warning that the premises are alarmed. The last four digits of the security company’s phone number represent the numbers VWXY

The Geocache

The geocache that you are after can be found at S37 4S.(X+Y)(YxY)X, E144 5T.(Y+Y)S(U+Y)
