Fæstningsanlægget blev anlagt i 1659 – 60 af den svenske kong Karl Gustav den 2., efter mønster fra den hollandsk-tyske befæstningskunst i renæssancetiden.
I 1660 overtog danskerne anlægget, og der blev opsat 10 kanoner og 2 morterer; men de blev aldrig brugt i krig. Siden 1856 har fæstningen ikke været bevæbnet.
De to nuværende kanoner er en gave fra Korsør Flådestation ved byens 550 års jubilæum i 1975.
Stedet betegnes som Kulturarv.

Korsør Fortress

The fortress was built in 1659 - 60 by the Swedish King Karl Gustav the 2nd, following the pattern of Dutch-German fortification art during the Renaissance period.
In 1660 the Danes took over the place, and 10 cannon and 2 mortars were set up; but they were never used in war. Since 1856 the fortress has not been armed.
The two present guns are a gift from Korsør Flådestation at the city's 550th anniversary in 1975.
