Another excuse to go paddling on the peaceful Lake Kurwongba. Launch your watercraft at Mick Hanfling Park as for Smiley, our New Blue Canoe, The Yak Strikes Back and others. "Penelope" is an injured pelican we came across a couple of months ago. She has a broken left wing but seems to be coping quite well. We took the Pelican Rescue crew out to see her, but they thought she was best left where she is in the company of the rest of her pod on a peaceful lake with plenty of fish to eat. If you see her while you are here - she will try to take off if you approach but cannot fly - please let us know as we like to keep an eye on her from time to time. We are told by Pelican Rescue that she is in fact a she, about 9 years old which equates to roughly 30 years in human terms. The cache itself is an easy find, just paddle up to the northern end of the lake then follow Sideling Creek. A fun winding channel that eventually brings you to the cache, and a historic surprise! (We call it Turtle Channel - there are so many of them here sunning themselves on the logs sticking out of the water). I took us about 45 minutes of paddling, but then we (for which read “me”) are slow and always divert to check out any pelicans in case we can see our Penny. It is possible to continue on when the water level is high enough and we have not ruled out the possibility of placing yet another cache further upstream some day. Unless Orange Crew or the like beat us to it, of course.
