ST. John's Cathedral
On this site two previous churches were built
The first was built around 1681 and made from wood and it was said to be totally destitute of beauty or comfort.
The second was constructed around 1720 from english bricks .A violent earthquake in 1843 severely damaged the church
The third was constructed in 1846 from Freestone .
Freestone is either (sandstone or limestone ).Freestone was used as it was a fine grained stone which could be easily cut and not splinter.
The Cathedral is currently under restoration but you are free to enter to admire the beauty within
Opening hours 8-4
Ground zero will bring you to the cemetery section of the grounds .Look around and the grave site you are looking for is that off The Rev. William Vincent and a smaller headstone next to it with no name
There are three principal geological formations found through out the Caribbean
Igneous and metamorphic rocks,LimestoneHills or Karst and coastal ,sedimentary plains of varying depths resulting in three prevailing types of topography found either seperately or in combination.
Antigua was formed 25-30 million years ago when an underwater volcano erupted .Corals began to grow on submurged volcanic material and limestone rock began to form .
Limestone is a sedimentary rock made up of Calcite(CaCO3)as its main mineral
Some limestones were formed by chemical deposition and others by the accumulation of shells from minute sea creatures.
