St. Georg Kirche Augsburg
Sankt Georg ist ein ehemaliges Stift der Augustiner-Chorherren in Augsburg und gehört zur Diözese Augsburg.
Das spätere Kloster wurde um 1070 durch Bischof Embricho von Augsburg als geistliche Kummunität an einer St. Georg geweihten Kapelle gegründet.
1135 gründeten Bischof Walther I. von Dillingen und das Augsburger Domkapitel hier ein Stift für Augustiner-Chorherren, deren neuerbaute Kirche bereits 1142 geweiht wurde. Von ihr sind wahrscheinlich noch die unteren Geschosse des Kirchturms erhalten.
Die romanische Stiftskirche wurde 1490 bis 1506 durch einen spätgotischen Neubau mit drei Schiffen ersetzt. Wahrscheinlich wurde der Bau durch die Werkstatt des Burkhart Engelberg durchgeführt. Als Anbau entstand die 1506 vollendete Grabkapelle der Patrizierfamilie von Herwarth.
Die Konventsgebäude wurden 1702 bis 1705 von Hans Georg Mozart neu erbaut. Das Kloster wurde 1802 im Zuge der Säkularisation aufgelöst. Erst 1806 erfolgte die völlige Räumung der Klostergebäude. Später wurde die Anlage als Militärlazarett genutzt. Die Kirche wurde Stadtpfarrkirche, 1901 wurden auch die Klostergebäude in den Besitz der Pfarrei übergeben.
1880 wurde der Kirchenraum im Stil der Neugotik umgestaltet. Diese Regotisierung wurde im Zuge des Wiederaufbaus nach den schweren Bombenschäden des Jahres 1944 durch Thomas Wechs in den 1950er-Jahren wieder teilweise rückgängig gemacht und ein Teil der Ausstattung des 17. Jahrhunderts eingefügt.
Sankt Georg is a former monastery of the Augustinian Canons in Augsburg and belongs to the Diocese of Augsburg .
The later monastery was founded around 1070 by Bishop Embricho of Augsburg as a spiritual cohort of a St. George consecrated chapel.
In 1135, Bishop Walther I of Dillingen and the Augsburg cathedral chapter founded a monastery for Augustinian canons , whose newly built church was consecrated in 1142. From her probably still the lower floors of the church tower are preserved.
The Romanesque collegiate church was replaced from 1490 to 1506 by a late Gothic building with three naves. The construction was probably carried out by the Burkhart Engelberg workshop. As an extension was the 1506 completed funerary chapel of the patrician family of Herwarth.
The convent buildings were rebuilt from 1702 to 1705 by Hans Georg Mozart . The monastery was dissolved in 1802 in the course of secularization . Only in 1806 was the complete evacuation of the monastery building. Later, the plant was used as a military hospital. The church became a parish church , and in 1901 the monastic buildings were handed over to the parish.
In 1880, the church space was redesigned in the style of neo-Gothic. This regotization was partially reversed in the course of reconstruction after the heavy bomb damage of 1944 by Thomas Wechs in the 1950s and part of the equipment of the 17th Century inserted.
