This person was born in New York City in 18AB, and left for Britain at the age of 17 when it became apparent that they would be unable to pursue their acting career in the States.
In 1825, they made their debut in London’s West End playing Oronooko in The Revolt of Surinam.
In 18CD they stood in for Edmund Kean and became the first black actor to play Othello on a West End stage. Although their performance was well applauded by the audience, the critics failed to overcome their racial prejudices and savaged the performance.
They lived at 5 Hamlet Road towards the end of their life and had intended to return to the States, but died in Poland in 18EF.
