Geocache Description:

Come and celebrate Australia Day weekend on 27 January with a brief greet and meet event.

When:  Saturday 2018-01-27 09:30 – 10:30

Where:  Australian Garden, Wellington Botanic Garden

This will be a brief gathering of just 60 minutes in the morning, before you continue with your geocaching and other activities for the day.  The logbook will be available for signing at the meeting point during this period only.

The reason

On Friday 26 January 2018, Australia is celebrating its 230th anniversary of the landing of the First Fleet in Port Jackson in 1788, and geocaching.com is also promoting this as the “Signal the Frog® vacationing down-under” event weekend.

But do you know that, other than being Australia Day, 26 January is also celebrated around the world as:

  • Duarte Day (Dominican Republic)
  • Engineer's Day (Panama)
  • International Customs Day
  • Liberation Day (Uganda)
  • Republic Day (India)

As well, 27 January is observed as:

  • Day of the lifting of the siege of Leningrad (Russia)
  • International Holocaust Remembrance Day

This day is of course also part of the Auckland Anniversary long weekend too.

So there is something for everyone … and any number of excuses for an event.

Oh, you can also earn the Australia Day 2018 souvenir by attending this event (or any other geocaching event on Friday, 26 January to Sunday, 28 January 2018).

All geocachers are welcome.

The venue

The event venue is located at a corner of the Australian Garden inside the Wellington Botanic Garden.  The Botanic Garden was established in 1868 -- eighty years after the Port Jackson landing.  The garden covers 25 hectares and is a unique landscape of protected native forest, exotic trees, plant collections and stunning seasonal displays of bulbs and annual plants.  A Garden of National Significance, the Wellington Botanic Garden was also the first public garden in the country to be classified as a historic area by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

The Australian Garden was opened on 13 December 1991 and has banksias, Grevillea, kangaroo paw and other interesting Australian plants.

How to get there

The Botanic Garden has numerous entrances and paths that can lead to the meeting point.  The Cable Car Entrance is the closest and probably easiest trailhead for out-of-town visitors (from Australia or elsewhere).  From the top of the Wellington Cable Car, take the Downhill Path or the Cable Car Loop Walk to get to GZ.  The Te Araroa Trail, which stretches the length of New Zealand, also runs right past GZ as well!

Hope to see you there.
